Phantom cover

Wallets

Phantom is the go-to self-custody wallet for Solana, now stretched into a multichain daily driver. Extension plus mobile. SOL, SPL tokens, Solana NFTs, staking, in-wallet swaps, and dApp connect were the original job. Ethereum, Base, Polygon, Bitcoin (incl. Ordinals), Sui, Monad, HyperEVM sit beside that. Clean UI, Blowfish-style scam checks, Ledger support. Hot wallet. About 0.85% on many in-app swaps. Still beats MetaMask on Solana feel; loses to Rabby / MetaMask on deep custom EVM networking.

Description

Phantom launched as the MetaMask of Solana: browser extension that made connecting to Serum-era DeFi and NFT markets feel normal instead of CLI-painful. Mobile caught up fast. The product stayed opinionated about UX. Big buttons, clear balances, NFT gallery that does not look like an afterthought, spam token / junk NFT filters that matter on Solana’s meme flood. Millions of users later, most Solana apps still put Phantom near the top of the connect list.

Self-custody model is standard. Install from phantom.com or official stores. Create wallet. Write down the recovery phrase. Keys stay encrypted on device. Password or biometrics unlock. Lose the phrase or feed it to a fake “support” DM and nobody can help you. Seedless / social-style login options appear in newer flows for easier onboarding; treat those as convenience with their own trust assumptions, not magic recovery. Pair Ledger for larger stacks when the chain and flow support it.

Solana remains the home field. Send SOL and SPL tokens for pennies. Stake SOL to validators or liquid-stake style products (PSOL and similar in-app paths depending on what’s live). Connect to Jupiter, Raydium, Magic Eden, Drift, Kamino, pump-style memecoins. Transaction simulation and malicious-domain / scammer warnings (Blowfish-era tooling and Phantom’s own risk UI) catch a lot of drainers before Confirm. Solana’s speed and spam culture still mean you need discipline: never sign “verify wallet” nonsense, never import a seed into a site that asks for it.

Multichain is the 2024–2026 growth story. Official support lists typically include Solana, Ethereum, Base, Polygon, Bitcoin (Native SegWit / Taproot, Ordinals), Sui, Monad, and HyperEVM. One interface for balances and swaps across those networks. Cross-chain swapper / bridge flows (Li.Fi and peers under the hood in Phantom’s own writeups) move assets without hopping five websites. Useful. Not universal. You cannot casually add every custom EVM RPC the way MetaMask power users do. Deep Arbitrum / Optimism / niche L2 workflows still push people back to MetaMask or Rabby. Bitcoin and Sui support is real but thinner than Solana-native depth.

In-wallet swap fee is the money talk. Phantom commonly takes ~0.85% on select swaps and cross-chain routes, on top of network gas and bridge / LP costs. Gasless Solana mobile swaps can price higher (~1.5% in recent reviews) because the fee comes out of the trade instead of needing SOL for gas. Sends and receives are free from Phantom; you only pay chain fees. Fiat on-ramps (MoonPay, Coinbase Pay, etc.) add provider markup. For size, swap on Jupiter / Uniswap with Phantom connected and skip the wallet tax.

Product sprawl is intentional. NFT trading shortcuts, memecoin discovery, Hyperliquid-powered perps in some regions, Phantom Cash stablecoin payment rails where allowed. Trading tools inside a hot wallet cut friction and raise liquidation / phishing surface. Regional blocks on perps and Cash are common. Treat leveraged products as separate risk, not “wallet features.”

Versus MetaMask: MetaMask owns EVM dApp compatibility and custom networks. Phantom owns Solana UX and usually feels cleaner for mobile. Versus Solflare: Solflare stays Solana-deep with different staking / hardware nuances; Phantom wins on polish and multichain breadth for most retail. Versus hardware-only: cold storage still wins for long-term bags. Phantom is for active use.

Who it’s for: Solana DeFi / NFT / memecoin users, and people who want one pretty wallet across Solana plus a short list of other chains. Who should skip heavy reliance: EVM power users who need every L2 and custom RPC, fee-sensitive high-volume swappers, and anyone parking life savings in a browser extension.

STRENGTHS

- Best mainstream Solana UX: connect, NFTs, staking, spam filters, mobile and extension

- Default wallet for a huge share of Solana dApps. Low friction to get started

- Multichain coverage (ETH, Base, Polygon, BTC/Ordinals, Sui, Monad, HyperEVM) without a second app for basic use

- Transaction previews, scam / malicious domain warnings, spam NFT tools reduce common drain paths

- Built-in swaps, cross-chain routes, and fiat ramps keep casual users inside one interface

- Ledger support for stronger signing on supported flows

- Polished design that beginners actually finish onboarding with

WEAKNESSES

- Hot wallet. Compromised device or leaked seed = loss. No support refunds

- ~0.85% (or higher gasless) in-app swap / bridge fees add up vs direct DEX routing

- Limited custom EVM network support vs MetaMask / Rabby. Not the power-user EVM wallet

- Solana’s scam density means phishing and malicious signatures stay the main loss vector

- Perps, Cash, and some trading features are region-gated and can lure beginners into leverage

- Multichain depth outside Solana is newer and uneven; Solana is still where it feels complete

- Fiat and bridge partners add fee opacity and third-party dependency

- One wallet for everything encourages overconcentration of risk on a single hot account
