Rainbow

Rainbow (Rainbow Studio, NYC roots, product era from late 2010s) set out to make Ethereum self-custody look and feel human. Big colorful UI, clear token lists, NFTs treated like a gallery instead of truncated contract addresses. That design bet is still the brand. You hold a standard seed / keys. Rainbow does not custody funds. Lose the phrase or approve a drainer and there is no support reset. Same self-custody contract as MetaMask, with better vibes.

Mobile is the home field. Extension (Chrome and friends, broadly from 2024 onward) covers desktop dApp connect so you are not stuck phone-only. Chains are EVM by design: Ethereum mainnet plus L2s and sidechains that matter for cheap activity (Optimism, Arbitrum, Base, Polygon, Zora, plus expansions like Avalanche, BSC, Blast, and other EVM names depending on release). Network switching is smooth. Custom RPCs exist for power users. Native Bitcoin / Solana / Cosmos are out of scope. If your bag is SOL-heavy, use Phantom. If you need every chain on earth, Trust or OKX. Rainbow stays in the Ethereum cultural lane on purpose.

Day-to-day: send/receive, watch addresses (impersonation / read-only mode to browse any public wallet without importing keys), swap via Rainbow Router (DEX aggregation), bridge across supported L2s, buy crypto through MoonPay / Ramp-style partners where available. ENS and human-readable identity fit the product tone. Activity feeds and notifications try to make onchain life understandable. Hardware pairing with Ledger and Trezor is the right upgrade when balances get real. Flashbots-style MEV protection on swaps is marketed to cut sandwich pain on Ethereum routes. Transaction previews help beginners see what they are signing; they do not replace Rabby-level simulation paranoia for heavy DeFi.

Fees: wallet install is free. Sends cost network gas only. In-app swaps commonly take about 0.85% protocol fee plus gas and pool costs, in the same ballpark as Phantom / MetaMask wallet taxes and worse than Rabby’s ~0.25%. For size, connect Rainbow to Uniswap / 1inch and skip the in-wallet swap. Fiat on-ramps add partner markup and possible KYC.

Developer side: RainbowKit is widely used to add “Connect Wallet” to Ethereum apps with a clean modal. That ecosystem presence matters even if you never open the consumer app. Open-source repos (mobile and extension) let people inspect code; audits and community review show up in the security story. Still a hot wallet on a phone or browser. Phishing clones of the rainbow brand, malicious approvals, and seed screenshots remain the loss vectors.

Versus MetaMask: MetaMask wins default dApp ubiquity and Snaps / weird-network reach. Rainbow wins mobile UX, NFT presentation, and friendlier onboarding. Versus Rabby: Rabby wins pre-sign simulation and approval hygiene for power DeFi; Rainbow wins aesthetics and NFT/L2 lifestyle use. Versus Coinbase Wallet: Coinbase wins exchange hop and Smart Wallet passkeys; Rainbow wins independent Ethereum-native design culture. Versus Exodus: Exodus is multichain desktop portfolio; Rainbow is Ethereum-culture mobile Web3.

Who it’s for: Ethereum / L2 users, NFT collectors, and beginners who will actually finish wallet setup because the app does not feel hostile. Who should skip it: BTC/SOL natives, fee-sensitive high-volume swappers, and treasury ops that need Safe multisig or Rabby-grade signing defense.

- Hot wallet. Design polish does not stop phishing or bad approvals

- Extension is newer and less “default Connect” than MetaMask for many dApps

- Smaller user base and brand mindshare than MetaMask / Trust / Phantom

- DeFi power features trail Rabby on simulation depth and approval ops

- Fiat buys depend on third-party on-ramps (fees, KYC, regional limits)
